Yes, I’m gullible and too trusting

Except when it falls within my home or family, I’m the atypical Momma Bear. I go on counter attack long before reactionary defence.

I’ve been a student of demographics since the #mid80s paying attention AND experiencing life at the bleeding edge: living life boldly full with optimism which often was misunderstood as confidence and sometimes cockiness.

I know of what I speak

Who said that?

Our tribe of aging Yuppies: facing obstacles we should be tough enough you’d expect by now.

I don’t know, I only have a hunch since I became a Yuppy by the mid-eighties (80s) starting the road of optimism mashed.

Using lingo I grew up with is a pretty indicative Yuppy vibe. It’s not like we’re singing “Glory Days” as our elder Baby Boomer idol or sibling (sometimes both) tends to.

One can truly attract their tribe simply by their vibe. What starts out from spying on your kids when they were in their teens.

Naive and too trusting does not always mean gullible: a discussion AND argument with my mom for probably all of my years.

Where your opinion matters: Book Reviews

 

Creating a tribe within interests you have is a clever way of growing your following on Social Media – Twitter, Facebook, for example, or virtually bookmarking on Pinterest or following a hashtag on Instagram that tends to lead you down the path of your own interests.

I like reading, so this was an easy spot to be. There are great sites that help you not just post your own personalized review, but also, recommend other books by similar author(s) or genres, based on what you mark as read and how you rated it.

Long before Good Reads, I was a devotee of AMAZON because of its best sellers and also its “if you like this, you may like that” similar model adopted by Apple on iTunes and its APP store.

PRIVACY:

A theme I’ve had lately, having this sort of knowledge shown, shared, and willingly given is a WIN-WIN: you can attract new followers who may follow you everywhere else.

The following was a book review posted on AMAZON earlier this evening:

 

HER HONOR
It was as though the author is sorting out the main character for consideration later on for a series ….. I felt he was doing a hard sell for us to like the main character, her honor. There was a little over zealous portrayal of a good ole boys network missing out on corruption, power …… they weren’t evil villains or compelling enough to care. The key figure in the background was boring or stereotypical. Maybe I didn’t get it as smoothly because there were too many subplots competing with each other, taking extra effort to keep who’s who straight. Not smooth at all. The idea and basis had my commitment to finish without any really climax or suspenseful conclusion with a high degree of predictability. Nice try.

Tech can make life easier

Like most yuppies, I’m comfortable with technology but not a bear about privacy

I can consume many minutes gliding across recipes. Most of my best made recipes are still handwritten on lined index cards from the 1980s onward. Even a few interpretations of “a little of this and you can tell how much by adding that” shared by my mom. Grateful for the others from friends after sampling their cuisine.
I’m starting to get more on board with using APPs out of convenience. I use Pinterest as my online repository of data: a virtual filing cabinet of ideas, images, beautiful art & photography, recipes, decorating, gardening.
However, I have stopped myself from getting an APP once I’ve read the PRIVACY disclaimer: I am willing to grant access to storing information by me on Google because it allows technology, algorithms and personalized preferences that help me find something I’m looking for.
How companies are generating revenue online is full of mystery: unlike radio or television who readily share advertising in full transparency. Even magazines and newsprint must display Advertorial” or indicate “paid advertising”.

Readership or viewer audience or audio range are and have been tracked for decades: nobody can pick a number out of thin air.
I’ve had the same cell number since I got my first cellular telephone the size of a small brick, long before smartphones and tablets. It was part of my career in magazine advertising and digital print sales. (Started by a forward thinking executive in publications who recognized the efficiency it would bring, to clients forwarding their print ready digital files for critical documents regardless of where in the world they’d end up, regardless of size from architects, engineers or design firms.
Next up: recipes
Like contacts, somethings gotta give. I have contacts in three places:
  1. Address Book (hand written)
  1. Smartphone
  2. Online based on email or profiles or APPs
Thus, I’m on the hunt to combine my recipes and look for new ones in a snap. I’m fine with contacts being protected from shysters who trick you into clicking or not paying close attention to privacy rules when you use various sites.
I’m fine with algorithms (computer generated numbers manipulated into conveying insights, habits, etc.). That’s because I’m aware and being more observant. There is no need to develop paranoia or develop hysteria over anything that may not apply to me or I’ve become more attentive.
I’ve used a variety of methods to flag where mail is coming from: companies can buy addresses for direct mail marketing. Or, is the information from a provider.
Nevertheless, I will look for APPs that don’t use my information to create their own new revenue streams. I will continue to read PRIVACY statements by those who have my business and won’t sweat from the trusted ones who use my data to give me a better experience or help me find things faster, even customized keeping my own unique taste.
The conversations will continue, I just look forward to less ALARMS.

Some offer grocery listing with recipes…. Loblaws or Sobeys should marry these with shopping and delivery to provide value and stray away from strictly based on price.

We should heed the value others are pioneering for us by considering the same path in Canada…. also the natural path that would solidify as the disruptive instigating required in Canada. I would love to chair an initiative that examines what data is being given away without realizing it or frozen from the exerburant force that forces fear from being online, facing a more daunting loneliness because you isolate yourself outta fear. The resulting research would be incorporated into a report for the Prime Minister’s office, today being Justin Trudeau …..

Privacy. Really.

Apple is actively mining my data based how I use my iPad and iPhone so that that data can be mined based on algorithms when infused with AI > artificial intelligence which is far greater compilation based by what you click on.
The part that nobody wants to talk about: what you “put out there” even by email, and now your smartphone. Brave New World of 2018 merging and blending into 2019. My YUPPYdom blog on word press speaks to where I fit in under the microscope as a retired Yuppy gliding into the sunset while dodging fires and parent of FOUR (4) – no easy task.
So let’s talk about PRIVACY rationally and intellectually here.
There’s so much fear and scary world ranting media or politicians suffocating us with gut wrenching drama and twisted laments to alarm every creature and human kind (breaths, eats, reproduces, dies) and humans having brains (some more debatable than others) and beliefs in a higher power
Get this: while Rob was watching The Seattle Seahawks football game, and after doing Apple IOS ((IOS is the name of Apple’s operating system while Android is the language of smartphones that use Android for every other than Apple smartphone i.e. iPhone .
Similarly, yet differently, most desktop computers use Microsoft’s software.
The difference could be gathered without scientific or technical proof, Microsoft didn’t design offering to gather data from computers, nor did HP, IBM, Dell, etc. Hardware designed to gather data.
While I was doing what all of us should do, I went to settings on my smartphone to see what apps are on my phone, which ones are able to send me notifications or do automatically do updates.
Nobody had to get their grandson or sons over to “clean” your phone. In fact, they may unlikelygo through your smartphone like that. You may not have remembered what APPS you gave access to, never mind permission to gather that information … now, some calling it mining for data … as in looking for gold.
There’s where our generation of Yuppies do not know how to do this ourselves either. In fact, Yuppies are programmed to expect a new phone every few years and fewer have adjusted those expectations because the smartphones cost upward to $1500 …….no longer costs a couple of hundred bucks that the phone companies no longer are able to recoup the cost.
NEXT look at the PRIVCY tab on any computer or smartphone: it is going to take a while. Or you will just disallow and not give them permission to do something where a PRIVACY is needed in the first place.
Now there are hundreds of people who refuse to get a smartphone or access APPS or use any kind of social media (my husband proudly boasts about this fact).
In today’s world, if you are human, you need either a smartphone or computer (that includes tablets). You need a connection on the internet and the unhip Yuppies clearly have a Facebook profile and use the internet. You smarties May think only having Hotmail (Microsoft) or GMail (Google) or Yahoo email free services, they are able to get a sense of what you do or maybe what you look at and try to be even more helpful showing you things to attract your attention (influence your click).
Then you may use Google or Google Plus, and are freely telling them more about you. There ya go says the skeptics, I don’t do anything online to prevent any big brother, bad guys, hackers or identity theft freaks from your “data”. Basically data is information that pertains to something. Algorithms are instructions on what information should be gathered for no other reason that showing other things which based on their data mining, are things that are going to attract you. Amazon has been doing this for years and we’ve even liked it, enjoyed it. If you buy a book, what are people saying about the book, what books are the most popular and if you only read thrillers, they may inform you that you can preorder a book coming out from your favourite author. If you go to a book store, they may not know that John Grisham will have a big shipment for the Holliday shop, however, data can tell them who always buys this book, does the author or Amazon want to give a deal to fans.
Not all data is bad. If you catch my drift, you’ll even see how much easier your life can be by your own data. What I’m saying is read what PRIVACY matters or information or data is being gathered on you. Consider the plus sides to time saving, money budgeting, information being handed to you based on what you tend to like.
No, it not big brother telling you what to like, nobody is pressuring you to anything. At any time you can shut off the flow of your information, private details, personal history, by deleting or stopping the use of any hardware or software.
What I’m suggesting is work with it, go with flow. Just control who takes what information. Navigate what is good information and what is too near and dear.
Think positive. People and companies want to sell you something. That’s a reality: remember billboards and radio ads? By understanding and companies clear on what information they gather and that you can opt out, it isn’t as scary as it sounds. In fact, if you scroll through your phone or computer, you get to know what is where and how to delete something.
Be optimistic. 80-90% of all companies everywhere want you as its customer, they may even reward your loyalty. If you deny access to PRIVACY you may be overreacting. Turning things off and deleting programs or APPS puts the control at your fingertips, rewarding you with convenience and value by allowing some access.
Don’t be lazy. Your son-in-law can do more important things like take your daughter out for dinner (not applicable to me thus why given). I do these things waiting at the dentist office … you get my meaning.

The opportunities are endless as we narrow towards or drill down to what we love

Yet we cant uncover what we may love and be passionate about without reflection and self examination followed by discovery pursuits on topics, causes, genres led by endless curiosity.

I found myself scrolling and swiping in search of subject matter images to guide me in my own creative adventures.
