Once upon a time, added value didn’t exist.
Likely our grand elders and beyond ancestry links to a faraway land, there wasn’t a need for added value.
Back in the day, they went to a General Store for hardware and supplies. From things to make a cheap contraption, like tools and metal used. Somebody must have built a contraption at the end of the country lane, to help the postman.
Then, somebody must have thought:
“Wouldn’t it make sense if there were a box at the end of farmer’s lanes and mansion gates with long windy drives?”
